At Least 48 Killed in Mali Goldmine Collapse
A collapse at an illegally operated goldmine in western Mali has left at least 48 people dead, according to local authorities and sources.
Rescue Operations Ongoing
Rescuers continue to search for victims following the deadly incident. Some victims were reported to have fallen into water, including a woman carrying her baby on her back.
Mining Accidents Common in Mali
Mali, one of Africa’s top gold producers, frequently experiences mining accidents due to unregulated mining operations. The country faces challenges in controlling such illegal mining activities.
Incident Location and Background
The collapse occurred at a former goldmine site that was previously operated by a Chinese company. Local officials and the Kenieba goldminers’ association confirmed the death toll at 48.
Recent Mining Disasters
This is not the first such incident. In January, a landslide at a goldmine in southern Mali killed at least 10 people. More than a year ago, a tunnel collapse at a similar site claimed over 70 lives.
