Manchester United has announced plans to build a new £2 billion ($2.59 billion) stadium with a capacity of 100,000 seats, making it the largest in Britain. The new stadium will be constructed next to the current Old Trafford, as part of a major regeneration project for the area.
Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe called it an “incredibly exciting journey” and aims to create “the world’s greatest football stadium.” Since becoming a minority owner in February last year, Ratcliffe has been exploring options to either redevelop Old Trafford, the club’s home since 1910, or construct a brand-new facility.
At an event in London, United unveiled architectural designs for the stadium, which has received government backing from British finance minister Rachel Reeves. The project is expected to generate 92,000 jobs and contribute £7.3 billion ($9.44 billion) annually to the British economy. Additionally, the development includes the construction of 17,000 new homes.
Old Trafford, with a current capacity of 74,140, has been England’s largest club stadium but has faced growing criticism in recent years. The venue has not undergone significant redevelopment since 2006, and complaints have emerged about issues such as a leaking roof and rodent infestations.
The new stadium aims to modernize Manchester United’s facilities and cement its status as one of the world’s most iconic football clubs.
