Karachi Commissioner Announces “Complaint Cell” to Address Encroachments and Traffic Issues
In a bid to tackle rising encroachments, deteriorating infrastructure, and worsening traffic congestion, Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi unveiled a new “Complaint Cell” at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Thursday. The initiative, which includes representatives from the commissioner’s office, deputy commissioners’ offices, and KCCI, aims to address the challenges faced by shopkeepers due to encroachments.
- Complaint Cell’s Purpose: Naqvi emphasized that the cell would address encroachments affecting shopkeepers and warned of strict penalties, including sealing businesses, for those allowing or aiding encroachments.
- Traffic and Development Projects: Naqvi acknowledged that ongoing projects, such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, are contributing to traffic congestion. However, he assured that the situation would improve after project completion and mentioned plans to consider allowing heavy vehicles during off-peak hours to ease congestion.
- Parking Misuse: The commissioner noted the misuse of parking spaces for commercial purposes and announced the revival of the “Commissioner-KCCI Liaison Committee” to address these concerns.
- KCCI’s Input: KCCI President Jawed Bilwani suggested practical solutions for improving road safety, including restricting garbage collection by the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) to nighttime and early morning hours to alleviate daytime traffic congestion and reduce accidents.
This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve Karachi’s infrastructure and address the city’s growing urban challenges.
