Ukraine’s NATO Membership is Not Realistic: US Defence Secretary

BRUSSELS: The US Defense Chief emphasized that while security guarantees would be necessary for Ukraine, NATO membership was “not realistic,” and clarified that the United States would not deploy troops on the ground.

Trump’s Vision for Ending the War

In a strong introduction at NATO headquarters, Hegseth outlined the framework for a potential deal to end Russia’s war on Ukraine, a goal that former President Trump has pledged to achieve.

“Our message is clear, the bloodshed must stop and this war must end,” he said, addressing a group of Kyiv’s supporters, which included Ukraine’s defense minister.

“Illusionary Goal” of Pre-2014 Borders

Hegseth stated that attempting to revert Ukraine to its pre-2014 borders was an “illusionary goal” that would only prolong the conflict.

He suggested that any security guarantees should be backed by both European and non-European troops with the necessary capabilities.

US Energy Strategy and European Responsibility

Hegseth also noted that Trump was “unleashing US energy production” and encouraging other nations to follow suit to lower prices and push Moscow to the negotiating table.

However, he insisted that Europe must now contribute the “overwhelming share” of aid to Ukraine.

US Visits to Europe Under Trump’s Leadership

Hegseth’s visit to NATO headquarters marks the beginning of high-level US visits to Europe following Trump’s ascension to power. The series will culminate in Vice President JD Vance’s meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in Munich on Friday.

European Security and NATO’s Defense Spending

On European security, Hegseth echoed Trump’s call for NATO to more than double its defense spending target, advocating for 5 percent of GDP. He made it clear that, while the US remains committed to NATO, it would “no longer tolerate an imbalanced relationship” where Europe underfunds its share.

A Fresh Aid Package for Ukraine

Responding briefly, Britain’s Defense Minister John Healey said, “Secretary Hegseth, we hear you. We hear your concerns on stepping up for Ukraine, we are and we will. On stepping up for European security. We are and we will.”

In line with this commitment, Britain announced a new aid package worth $185 million for Ukraine.

NATO’s Defense Spending Goal

NATO chief Mark Rutte expressed his expectation that the defense spending goal would increase to “north of three percent.” He stated, “We need to do a lot more so we have what we need to deter and defend. And so that there is more equitable burden sharing.”

Key Points

  • Security guarantees are essential for Ukraine, according to Hegseth.
  • The EU must take on the “overwhelming share” of aid to Ukraine, as stated by the US Defense Secretary.
  • Hegseth reiterated Trump’s calls for NATO to boost its aid efforts.

The US defense chief emphasized the need for robust European contributions to the security of Ukraine and NATO’s defense efforts. While security guarantees for Ukraine are seen as essential, the prospect of NATO membership remains off the table. With a shift towards European responsibility, the alliance faces an urgent need to increase defense spending and enhance burden sharing.
