Trump’s Tesla Purchase Sparks Debate Over EV Stance
Former President Donald Trump’s recent purchase of a Tesla Model S has surprised many, given his past criticism of electric vehicles (EVs). The $80,000 purchase, announced on March 10, 2025, was framed as a show of support for Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk.
Trump and Musk were seen together outside the White House, inspecting Tesla models, with Trump calling them a “great product.” However, his endorsement comes despite years of publicly criticizing EVs.
Trump’s History of EV Criticism
At rallies in 2023, Trump repeatedly dismissed EVs as impractical and overpriced. In December 2023, he claimed they “don’t go far enough” and mocked their range limitations, saying:
“You can’t get out of New Hampshire in an electric car.”
He also criticized President Joe Biden’s push for EV adoption, calling it unfeasible and a government overreach.
Similarly, in November 2023, Trump questioned EV efficiency, saying:
“They don’t go far. They cost a lot of money. […] They got some basic problems.”
A Shift in Stance?
Despite his past remarks, Trump recently praised Musk, stating the Tesla CEO had been “treated very unfairly” and should not be penalized for being “a patriot.” His purchase and endorsement of Musk are seen as an attempt to strengthen their political and business ties, especially after Musk financially supported Trump’s 2024 campaign.
Political and Financial Impact
The move has sparked debate over Trump’s shifting stance on EVs, with critics questioning whether his newfound support is genuine or politically motivated. Regardless, the endorsement had an immediate impact—Tesla’s stock price rose by 4% following the announcement.
While Trump’s purchase may help repair his relationship with the EV industry, it remains unclear whether it will overcome the backlash from his previous anti-EV rhetoric.
