Any attempt by India to block Pakistan’s water will be deemed an act of war: NSC

Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC) has strongly condemned India’s attempts to shift blame for the recent attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) onto Pakistan, calling India’s retaliatory actions “unilateral, unjust, and politically motivated.” In particular, Pakistan warned that any attempt by India to block or divert water flowing into Pakistan would be considered an act of war.

Key Points:

  • India’s Blame Game Condemned: Pakistan rejected India’s attempt to connect the Pahalgam attack with Islamabad, labeling it an irresponsible move to escalate tensions without evidence.

  • Water Security as a Red Line:

    • Pakistan rejected India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), stating that the treaty is a binding international agreement that cannot legally be suspended by either party.

    • NSC asserted that any diversion of Pakistan’s water would trigger a full-spectrum response using all elements of national power.

  • Retaliatory Measures by Pakistan:

    • Wagah Border closed to Indian land transit.

    • Pakistani airspace closed to all Indian-owned or operated flights.

    • 1972 Simla Agreement and SAARC visa exemption for Indian nationals suspended.

    • Indian nationals ordered to leave Pakistan within 48 hours.

    • Indian defence advisers declared persona non grata and Indian High Commission staff reduced to 30.

    • All trade with India suspended, including indirect trade through third countries.

  • International Legal and Moral Violations:

    • The PM’s Office labeled India’s actions as violating UN resolutions, international norms, and bilateral treaties.

    • Emphasized that India’s aggressive stance lacks legal merit and undermines regional peace.

  • Diplomatic and Humanitarian Outreach:

    • Pakistan expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the Kashmir attack and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

    • Highlighted the importance of distinguishing between terrorism and diplomatic engagement, rejecting India’s attempt to exploit the tragedy for political gain.

  • India’s Measures Escalate Tensions:

    • India suspended visa services for Pakistani nationals, ordered Pakistanis to leave India, and reduced the Pakistani diplomatic presence.

    • Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s announcement of suspending the IWT was labeled by Pakistan as provocative and unlawful.

The NSC’s response emphasizes that water is a non-negotiable national interest, and any interference will provoke a severe response. With diplomatic ties unraveling and treaties being challenged, regional stability is under significant threat, and international actors may soon be called upon to intervene to prevent further escalation.
