National Assembly Unanimously Adopts Resolution on India-Pakistan Ceasefire, Privatisation Plan Approved

ISLAMABAD (May 13, 2025) – The National Assembly (NA) on Monday unanimously passed a resolution commending Pakistan’s armed forces for their “exemplary professionalism, vigilance, and courage” in responding to India’s aggression last week, which culminated in a US-brokered ceasefire announced by President Donald Trump.

Key Highlights of the Resolution:

  1. Call for Structured Dialogue:

    • The resolution, moved by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, emphasized that lasting peace in South Asia can only be achieved through “sincere and structured negotiations.”

    • It reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional and global peace but stressed that “democracies are committed to dialogue, not conflict.”

  2. Kashmir Dispute & International Engagement:

    • The NA urged the government to actively involve the international community in resolving the Kashmir issue in line with UN Security Council resolutions and Kashmiri aspirations.

    • It also highlighted the importance of the Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan’s resolve to safeguard national interests.

  3. Tribute to Martyrs & National Unity:

    • The House paid homage to the soldiers and civilians martyred in India’s attacks, calling their sacrifice a “symbol of national pride and resilience.”

    • It lauded the nation for rising above political differences and standing united behind the country’s leadership and armed forces.

  4. Thanks to Friendly Nations:

    • The resolution expressed gratitude to allied countries for their diplomatic support during the crisis.

Phase-Wise Privatisation of 24 State-Owned Enterprises Approved

During the session, the NA was informed that the federal government has approved the privatisation of 24 state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in three phases over the next five years.

Privatisation Timeline:

1. First Phase (Within 1 Year):

  • Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)

  • First Women Bank

  • House Building Finance Corporation

  • Zarai Taraqiati Bank

  • Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO)

  • Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO)

  • Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO)

2. Second Phase (1-3 Years):

  • State Life Insurance Corporation

  • Pakistan Reinsurance Company

  • Central Power Generation Company

  • Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Sukkur, Hyderabad, and Hazara Electric Supply Companies

3. Third Phase (3-5 Years):

  • Postal Life Insurance Company

Other Key Developments:

  • Household Income Survey Completed:

    • The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has finalized the latest Household Income Expenditure Survey, with data compilation underway.

    • The findings, expected by end-2025, will guide poverty alleviation policies.

  • New Legislation Passed:

    • Special Technology Zones Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2025

    • National Commission for Minority Rights Bill, 2025

The NA’s resolution reaffirmed Pakistan’s preference for dialogue over conflict while standing firm on national security and Kashmir. Meanwhile, the government’s privatisation roadmap aims to improve economic efficiency, starting with PIA and power sector entities.
