Islamabad on Track to Become Pakistan’s First Cashless City

Islamabad is poised to become Pakistan’s first fully cashless city, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated a comprehensive plan to digitize municipal services, aiming to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility for residents. This ambitious project is being implemented in phases, with the first phase focusing on integrating digital payment systems for key civic services, including taxes, utility bills, land transfers, and parking fees.

The initiative leverages the State Bank of Pakistan’s Raast instant payment system, which facilitates real-time, secure, and cost-effective transactions. By incorporating QR code-based payments and mobile applications, the CDA aims to eliminate the need for physical cash, thereby reducing long queues and administrative delays. This move aligns with the government’s broader objective to promote a cashless economy, reduce corruption, and improve governance.

Strategic Implementation of Digital Payments

Under the CDA’s plan, digital payment systems are being introduced across various departments and services. Residents can now make payments for property taxes, water bills, land transfers, and parking fees through QR codes and mobile applications, eliminating the need to visit offices in person.
