PTI refused permission to organize rally at iconic Lahore location.

PTI’s Request for Minar-i-Pakistan Rally Rejected Over Security Concerns

Lahore: The Lahore Deputy Commissioner (DC) Syed Musa Raza has rejected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) request to hold a public gathering at Minar-i-Pakistan on March 22, citing serious security threats and law and order concerns.

Key Developments:

  • Security & Intelligence Concerns:

    • The decision was based on recommendations from the District Intelligence Committee (DIC).

    • March 22 coincides with the death anniversary of Hazrat Ali (R.A.), requiring heavy security deployment.

    • Intelligence reports indicated 76 trained suicide bombers were preparing for terrorist activities in Pakistan.

    • Recent terror attacks include:

      • Akora Khattak bomb blast near Bannu Cantonment (KP).

      • Jaffar Express attack in Balochistan.

    • The National Assembly recently passed a resolution against Fitna-al-Khwarij, and law enforcement agencies are focused on counterterrorism efforts.

  • PTI’s Response:

    • Punjab PTI Vice President Akmal Khan Bari, who submitted the rally request, criticized the government’s inability to provide security.

    • He stated in a video message that the government should resign if it cannot ensure public safety.

  • Lahore High Court (LHC) Ruling:

    • PTI’s petition challenging the delay in decision-making was disposed of following the DC’s rejection.

    • Justice Farooq Haider acknowledged that the DC had legal authority to deny the request.

    • PTI retains the right to challenge the decision in a higher forum.

The rejection of PTI’s rally request underscores the ongoing security threats and government’s prioritization of public safety over political gatherings. However, the political backlash from PTI highlights concerns over restrictions on political activities and democratic rights. The situation may lead to further legal and political challenges in the coming days.
