China to Provide High-Speed Train Units to Pakistan

In a significant development for Pakistan’s urban transportation, China has agreed to supply specialized high-speed train units for the upcoming Islamabad–Rawalpindi rail service. Set to commence operations on March 23, 2026, this collaboration aims to enhance connectivity between the twin cities, offering a modern and efficient travel option for commuters. The project is a joint initiative between the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Ministry of Railways.

The new service will operate between Saddar Railway Station in Rawalpindi and Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad, utilizing advanced diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains. These trains are expected to reduce travel time to just 20 minutes, significantly improving daily commutes. The CDA will oversee the operations, while Pakistan Railways will be responsible for maintaining the track infrastructure. A proposed fare of Rs. 50 per trip aims to keep the service affordable for the public.

Understanding the Islamabad–Rawalpindi High-Speed Rail Service

The forthcoming high-speed rail service between Islamabad and Rawalpindi represents a significant leap forward in Pakistan’s urban transportation infrastructure. By introducing specialized train units from China, the project aims to provide a modern, efficient, and affordable travel option for daily commuters. With a proposed travel time of just 20 minutes and a fare structure designed to be accessible, the service is poised to become a vital component of the region’s public transport network.

Integration with Islamabad’s Metro Network

A key feature of the project is its integration with Islamabad’s existing Metro Bus network. The planned extension of the Margalla Railway Station to the Ninth Avenue Metro Station will enable passengers to easily transfer between the rail and metro systems. This connectivity will provide direct access to important locations, enhancing the overall efficiency and convenience of public transportation in the twin cities.
