In Indian-occupied Kashmir, unrelenting rains over the past week have caused extensive damage, including landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods that have killed at least 110 people and left others homeless.
The districts of Jammu, Samba, Reasi, Doda, and Kishtwar have seen dangerously high river and stream levels, according to Kashmir Media Service (KMS). At least 50 villages have lost contact, and over 12,000 people have been relocated to safer regions so far. It has been mandated that educational establishments stay closed until August 31.
According to The Guardian, landslides in the district have proven to be the most fatal, burying 34 people beneath debris, while flash floods in Jammu alone claimed four additional lives yesterday. As rescue crews continue to clear debris in an effort to locate survivors, at least 20 more people are receiving medical attention in hospitals.
Additionally, flooding has halted communications and transportation. 58 rail trips have been canceled, while landslides have blocked dozens of highways. According to The Observer, the level of disturbance to day-to-day living in the area is one of the worst in decades.
