ISLAMABAD:
The federal government has implemented a 188% salary hike for federal ministers and ministers of state, aligning their pay with that of members of parliament. The change was enacted through the Federal Ministers and Ministers of State Salary and Benefits Amendment Ordinance 2025, issued by President Asif Ali Zardari and effective retroactively from January 1, 2025.
Under the new ordinance, the monthly salaries for both federal ministers and ministers of state have been set at Rs519,000. This represents a significant increase from their previous salaries—Rs200,000 for federal ministers and Rs180,000 for ministers of state.
The ordinance follows the federal cabinet’s approval in March 2025 to revise the compensation structure for ministers, aiming to standardize remuneration across top government positions.
Key Points:
-
A 188% salary increase for ministers has been implemented through a presidential ordinance.

The new salary for both federal ministers and ministers of state is now Rs519,000/month.
-
Previous salaries: Rs200,000 (federal ministers), Rs180,000 (ministers of state).
-
The amendment aligns ministerial salaries with those of parliament members.

The ordinance marks a substantial revision in the remuneration structure of Pakistan’s top executive officials, aiming to standardize salaries with parliamentary benchmarks. While the government justifies the increase as a structural alignment, the timing and scale of the raise may invite public scrutiny, especially in the context of broader economic challenges and fiscal constraints.
