Flash Floods Claim 4 Lives, Injure 1 Across KP Rescue Efforts Continue

Tragedy in KP: Flash Floods Claim 4 Lives, Dozens Affected as Torrential Rains Continue

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), July 6 — At least four people lost their lives and one was injured on Sunday as relentless flash floods—triggered by heavy monsoon rains—devastated parts of KP, including Buner, Malakand, and Mansehra, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

Since June 25, extreme weather conditions have wreaked havoc across the province. The PDMA’s latest situation report confirms 22 fatalities and 11 injuries due to flash floods, landslides, and windstorms.

The Swat River swelled dangerously, sweeping away 18 individuals in one incident alone, while fears of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) loom large due to rising temperatures in the region’s glacial zones.

Flash Floods Wreak Havoc in Buner & Malakand

In Buner’s Teenolo Dheri, a house collapse—caused by surging floodwaters—claimed the life of a woman and left one man injured. A temporary bridge pillar at Faizabad Khwar was also destroyed, cutting off access for nearby communities.

In Malakand, tragedy struck the Heero Shah union council as a woman and her grandson drowned while attempting to cross the raging Zor Mandi nullah. Two children were also swept away in the same incident—one was rescued alive, and the body of the other was recovered by Rescue 1122 teams.

“We’re actively patrolling high-risk areas and warning residents not to approach dangerous terrain,” said Assistant Commissioner Waheedullah, adding that the flash floods—originating from small mountain nullahs—had turned into ferocious torrents without warning. Three cows were also rescued during the operation in Zor Mandi.

Teenager Drowns in Mansehra

In a separate heart-wrenching incident, an 18-year-old boy from Rawalpindi drowned in Mansehra’s Putwar Halqa Jabba area while trying to cross a flooded stream on a motorcycle. His body was later recovered from the Ghotar area.

Landslides Block Roads in Buner, Torghar

Heavy rainfall also triggered multiple landslides in Buner’s Pandriks union council and Tharala, Torghar district, causing road closures and severe traffic disruption. The PDMA confirmed that heavy machinery had been dispatched to restore access swiftly.

PDMA Issues Red Alert: More Rains Expected

The PDMA continues to urge extreme caution, especially in mountainous and flood-prone regions. Residents are advised to avoid crossing nullahs, landslide-prone slopes, or damaged infrastructure. With more rainfall forecasted, the risk of flash floods and GLOFs remains dangerously high.
