London aims to host 2029 World Athletics Championships.

London is aiming to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, officials announced on Sunday ahead of the 45th London Marathon. A formal bid will be submitted to World Athletics in September, dependent on securing £45 million ($59.91 million) in government funding.

A feasibility study estimates that hosting the event could generate over £400 million in economic and social benefits, according to a joint statement by UK Athletics (UKA), Mayor Sadiq Khan, and Athletic Ventures — a partnership between UKA, Great Run Company, and London Marathon Events.

London previously hosted a highly successful World Championships in 2017, following the momentum of the 2012 Olympic Games, with sold-out crowds at the Olympic Stadium.

UKA President and former Olympic champion Denise Lewis expressed confidence in London’s ability to recreate the energy and success of 2017, emphasizing the broader goal of reshaping how major international sporting events are delivered in the UK.

The announcement coincided with the London Marathon, which saw 56,000 participants. Separately, Birmingham is already set to host the 2026 European Athletics Championships.
