PM Shehbaz Sharif Launches IT Programme to Boost Digital Economy

On Tuesday, 21 October 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched a countrywide information-technology project aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s digital economy and providing substantive support to entrepreneurial activities across the country. The project is known as the “Digital Pakistan Accelerator,” which is aimed at providing all-inclusive training, mentorship, financial support to young technology entrepreneurs, and increasing access to modern infrastructure largely in both, urban areas and small municipalities.
The IT industry in Pakistan has been showing good trends over the past few years with the IT exports standing at nearly $3 billion over the last fiscal year. The revenues of the sector are diversified as a growing number of professionals are earning money through freelance websites like Upwork and Fiverr. However, there are still considerably high disparities, smaller cities are still underserved, and lack of consistency in policy frameworks has often hindered long-term sectoral growth. In a recent interview, one of the founders of a startup in Rawalpindi explained, “The programme is ultimately providing access to talent beyond the major tech hubs.”

Analysis
The timing of this initiative is critical. The level of demand of digital services in the world is growing tremendously fast, and the demographic background of the Pakistan’s young population is rather a significant strategic opportunity. Officials argue that the development of digital capabilities could create jobs within the country, reduce reliance on the traditional sectors, and provide alternatives to illicit work. Besides, creating connections between graduates, entrepreneurs, and multinational technology businesses can allow Pakistan to obtain a unique role in the sphere of fintech, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce as well.
However, there are still implementation issues particularly in execution and coordination between federal and provincial governments. Nevertheless, according to the insiders of the industry, this program has a higher level of structural rigor than previous attempts, with an emphasis on measurable results and private sector collaboration. Residents in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad have already started engaging with workshops and local webinars, indicating a growing degree of enthusiasm and awareness.

Looking Ahead
To be fair, the success of the initiative is dependent on long-term implementation in an objective evaluation. Although the creation of training centers and offering grants are only the initial steps, ensuring startups thrive in competitive markets is the true test. Observers and scholars have realized that the success of this program depends on the strictness of performance. However, in case the project gets implemented with due diligence, the Digital Pakistan Accelerator can be a significant step towards a technologically focused economy, which provides young people of Pakistan with an opportunity to innovate and act globally.
