A Call for Peace After Victory
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking at a grand ceremony in Islamabad marking Youm-i-Tashakur (Thanksgiving Day), declared that Pakistan had achieved a decisive military victory in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos. Yet, instead of triumphalism, the premier delivered a message of peace, inviting India to coexist as a “peaceful neighbour.”
The military engagement between the two nuclear-armed nations erupted after India launched airstrikes following the Pahalgam attack. In response, Pakistan retaliated with precision strikes that, according to PM Shehbaz, left the adversary “reeling” and brought about an American-mediated ceasefire. Describing the series of events, the Prime Minister narrated how, after granting permission to retaliate, Pakistan’s defense forces executed a powerful and strategic response that shifted the regional balance.
“Victory does not mean aggression,” PM Shehbaz emphasized. “We’ve taught our enemy a lesson, but we now look forward to peace and prosperity.”
Dialogue Over Conflict: A Vision for Regional Stability
In his address, Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted the futility of continued conflict, stressing that both nations have suffered—through economic setbacks, unemployment, and insecurity.
“We must resolve our outstanding issues — including Jammu and Kashmir and water distribution — through dialogue,” he said. “Only then can we ensure sustainable peace and unlock our region’s immense potential.”
Shehbaz also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the Pakistani military and civilians during the recent confrontation. He praised the armed forces for their discipline, professionalism, and successful defense strategy, noting how their performance won admiration from allies across the world.
National Unity & Tribute to Martyrs
The Youm-i-Tashakur ceremonies were marked by displays of patriotism across the country. In Islamabad, a 31-gun salute inaugurated the day, followed by national songs, aerial flypasts, and prayers in mosques. High-ranking officials, including the service chiefs, cabinet members, and Prime Minister Shehbaz himself, were present.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister paid homage to the martyrs of the conflict, especially acknowledging the contributions of the Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy, and Army. He also visited the home of Squadron Leader Usman Yousaf, who was martyred during the strikes, to offer condolences alongside Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and COAS General Asim Munir.
Across provinces, similar commemorations took place. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced financial compensation for the families of martyred personnel, while Rescue 1122 and Punjab police organized events to honor the sacrifices and achievements of Pakistan’s defense forces.
