A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, leaving at least 20 people dead and more than 320 injured, according to initial reports.
The Observer Guardian reported that the quake’s epicenter was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers by the German Geophysical Research Center (GFZ). Tremors were felt across several provinces, causing widespread panic among residents who rushed out of their homes and workplaces.
Emergency response teams have been dispatched to the affected areas, where rescue operations are underway to assist those trapped under debris and provide medical aid to the injured.
Authorities have warned that the number of casualties could rise as reports continue to emerge from remote regions where communication remains limited.
The earthquake adds to the series of tremors that have struck Afghanistan in recent months, further straining the country’s fragile infrastructure and emergency response systems.
