For many years, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has pretended to be an organization looking after the cause of Islam. It is obvious that its daily activities go against the main teachings and founding values of Islam. These individuals take advantage of people’s faith in Islam to excuse their actions and conduct acts such as moving illegal drugs, blackmailing, ransom kidnapping, and getting involved in organized crimes. The facts show that what the TTP does is commit crimes using religion as a cover to get power and money.
Drug trafficking, making narcotics, and using them are some of the most shocking parts of their operating methods. Drug trafficking by the TTP is so important to their finances because their leaders have no respect for what is right in Islam. By getting involved in such illegal operations, they are able to pay for their campaigns throughout Pakistan and nearby countries, which reveals that the main reason for their actions isn’t religion, but money and power.
TTP has been involved in drug smuggling for a long time and not only recently. Over the years, the group has joined forces with the Afghan Taliban and other drug traders to make money through the drug trade for their terrorist activities. The Afghan government’s thorough investigation in 2025 found that narcotics business in the country made more than $70 billion and that the TTP network received over $2 billion from it.
The large amount of money involved in this issue proves how much terrorism and instability it is bringing to the region. The results make it clear that TTP’s talk of an Islamic struggle is false, as it is clear they make money from something Islam strongly opposes. Smuggling drugs such as methamphetamine and heroin supports TTP’s terrorism activities in buying weapons, recruiting more people, bribing officials, and creating a stronger army of fighters.
As soon as the Afghan Taliban took over, they indicated that their goal was to prevent narcotics from being created or traded in Afghanistan, especially by harvesting poppy plants and making methamphetamine. In fact, these promises about education have failed to be fulfilled. The region has seen a huge rise in producing and shipping drugs instead of a decrease in drug trading. In the year 2021, an investigation done by the ALCIS company revealed that 448 ephedrine processing laboratories were located within 2,000 square km of Abdul Wadood Bazaar.
These labs were able to make 220 metric tons of methamphetamine every single year. The TTP terrorists who are part of this network are key members, taking care of the action and earning a lot from their contribution. This money enables them to get weapons, use safe hiding spots, and pay for terrorist activities taking their attacks across the border into Pakistan.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime also recently published a research brief showing that drug production in Afghanistan has gone up and these drugs are now reaching Pakistan and other neighbouring countries. It was mentioned that methamphetamine seizures in the region shot up from 2.5 tons in 2017 to 29 tons in 2021 and a larger share of it now comes from Afghanistan.
Last year, authorities from Afghanistan seized more than two and a half metric tons of drugs, signalling a big rise in production and distribution. It is clear that these figures show how drugs bring huge profits to criminals and also help terrorist groups such as the TTP. With the drugs spreading so widely, the region’s people, its organizations, and the countries themselves are put in great danger, because the drug trade helps to finance acts of aggression, terrorism, and attempts to disorganize countries.
Time and again, the country’s security forces have found and stopped TTP-related drug operations within Pakistan. Many operations have led to the capture of TTP members with advanced arms and much narcotics in their possession. These raids and arrests prove that the TTP are deeply involved in drug smuggling and secretly use these drugs, which makes it clear how lacking they are in morals and ethics. Since the unholy link between drugs and terrorism is detrimental, the Pakistani state and its LEAs and military have concentrated efforts on ending it. As long as the TTP are involved in drug-related crimes, it shows that they must be tackled through joint efforts of many countries.
It is necessary to note that the actions of TTP contradict Pakistani society as well as practices within Islam. What the terrorists do in the name of religion is a threat to the morals of Muslims and to the safety of the whole region. Unlike what they claim, the TTP’s leaders do not care about jihad or their duty to Islam. They are similar to regular warlords, mafias, and drug barons who commit crimes for their own personal benefits.
Twisting religious beliefs to promote such actions is wrong and unsafe, as it distorts people’s thoughts and directs them to go against the truth and toward destructive activities. Because of this behaviour, Islamic scholars, religious organizations, and regular Muslims around the globe have condemned them. Actually, the TTP works as a curse on society, sharing its ideas to spread violence and corruption by hiding behind religious terms.
Those who lead the TTP and its foot soldiers have time and again shown their disregard for human life, what is right and wrong, and justice. By becoming involved in narcotics, they hurt people who take these substances as well as lead to more illegal activities and disturbance in the region. Thanks to the money made from drugs, the TTP can add new members, obtain bombs and firearms, and prepare assaults on Pakistan’s civilians, government offices, and law enforcement agencies.
The nature of these crimes negatively affects the nation’s advancement, holds back the community, and prevents peace in the region. Transporting every kilogram of heroin or meth could result in more blood being shed due to the money flowing from this business.
Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies are doing all they can to eliminate this evil from the country. To end the TTP drug networks, operations, intelligence missions, and border security have been reinforced. It is also trying to build stronger collaboration with Afghanistan and nearby nations in order to address this menace that affects many countries. It is obvious that removing the TTP’s control over drugs is vital for keeping their finances low and reducing how they operate. Thanks to the strong stance of Pakistani security and the efforts of the public, it seems likely that tackling this downfall can be achieved. Pakistanis are joined with their security forces in the noble mission to fight crime and terrorism in their country.
With the help of Allah and the strong determination of the Pakistanis, the TTP Khawarij will no longer pose a danger in society. Things like their unjust actions and wrong ideas have no part in a society trying to be peaceful, advance, and faithful to Islam. This fight not only involves a terrorist group; it is an ethical and religious conflict against people who sacrifice Islam for benefits in life.
Every Pakistani, every Muslim, and every person committed to justice has to oppose the propaganda of the TTP, show their wrongdoings, and assist in eliminating this challenge forever. With the efforts of our security forces, people’s diligence, and the help of our faith, victory against this danger should be achieved. Joining forces, Pakistan will overcome terrorists and their illegal empire of drug-related crimes.
