Humanitarian Mission to Gaza Launches from Italy Amid Siege

Greta Thunberg joins international activists in a humanitarian voyage to Gaza, aiming to break the Israeli blockade through non-violent maritime action.

Humanitarian Voyage Begins: Freedom Flotilla Departs from Sicily

A humanitarian ship under the banner of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) has departed from the port of Catania, Sicily, en route to Gaza. The 12-person crew includes renowned climate activist Greta Thunberg, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, and Franco-Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan.

Sailing aboard the Madleen, the vessel carries barrels of aid which, although limited in quantity, are symbolically charged. The mission, described as both a humanitarian and political action, comes weeks after a previous FFC vessel, The Conscience, was targeted by drone strikes in international waters near Malta. The group has blamed Israel for the attack, though no official response has been issued.

Before departure, Thunberg stated, “No matter how dangerous this mission is, it is nowhere near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the lives being genocised.” The activists anticipate a seven-day journey to Gaza, assuming they are not intercepted.

A Non-Violent Stand Against Gaza Blockade

Founded in 2010, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition is a non-violent international initiative combining humanitarian assistance with protest. It explicitly opposes what it describes as Israel’s “illegal siege and escalating war crimes” in Gaza.

“This is not charity,” the FFC emphasized. “This is a non-violent, direct action to challenge the blockade.” As aid organizations struggle to access Gaza due to Israeli restrictions, lawlessness, and looting, the FFC mission highlights the dire need for independent humanitarian channels.

The United Nations has recently described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as the worst since the Israel-Hamas conflict began over a year and a half ago. While Israel has ended an 11-week complete blockade, aid flows remain severely limited and heavily restricted.

Growing Global Solidarity and Next Steps

The sailing of the Madleen is part of a broader wave of international solidarity with Gaza. Activist Thiago Avila revealed future efforts to challenge the blockade by land as well. The Global March to Gaza, an international initiative involving medical professionals, legal experts, and journalists, is expected to reach the Rafah crossing in mid-June for a peaceful demonstration.

Meanwhile, a new mechanism for aid, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, backed by the U.S. and Israel, has been rejected by the UN and major international organizations. Critics argue it lacks neutrality and enforces policies that displace Palestinian civilians.

The Freedom Flotilla’s mission stands as a symbolic yet courageous effort to defy the siege. As Thunberg stated, “The moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity.”
