MOSCOW — A wave of Ukrainian drone attacks led to temporary flight restrictions at Russian airports, including in Moscow, just days ahead of Russia’s annual military parade on Red Square commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Amid heightened security concerns, questions have emerged over the safety of the event, especially as it takes place during the ongoing war in Ukraine and amid stalled efforts by the United States to broker peace.
President Vladimir Putin declared a three-day ceasefire to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II — a gesture Ukraine has dismissed as a political stunt aimed solely at protecting the parade.
Despite tensions, about 20 international leaders are expected to attend the parade, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is set to arrive on Wednesday.
