The UN Secretary-General is very saddened by the destruction caused by floods in Pakistan.

The devastating death toll and extensive damage brought on by recent floods, landslides, cloudbursts, and intense rains in Pakistan have been deeply regretted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Guterres expressed his deepest sympathies to the victims’ families in a statement, saying he was “deeply saddened by the human loss caused by the floods in Pakistan.” The UN “stands in solidarity with all those affected,” he said.

Destruction Scale
Flooding, landslides, lightning, and cloudbursts in Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have killed 540 people so far, and more than 200 are still unaccounted for.

Buner district is one of the hardest-hit areas, and authorities say the destruction is unmatched. Deputy Commissioner Kashif Qayyum confirmed 401 deaths, 671 injuries, and over 4,000 cattle losses, telling reporters that “the scale of destruction is extraordinary.”

According to the statistics, 2,300 residences were totally destroyed and 413 partially damaged, six schools were impacted, two police stations were washed away, 639 cars were lost, and more than 1,000 stores were damaged. Miles of devastation and piles of rubble can be seen throughout the impacted areas.

Global Concern
The issue underscores Pakistan’s heightened susceptibility to climate-related catastrophes, according to observers. Local authorities are working on rescue and relief efforts, but the extent of the damage has outstripped available resources, according to The Guardian’s climate correspondents. The UN chief’s statements of solidarity serve as a reminder of the pressing need for long-term resilience planning and international assistance.

Guardians of humanitarian relief emphasise that Pakistan cannot handle such recurrent climate disasters alone as families grieve their losses and communities search through debris. They contend that in the upcoming weeks and months, sustained international engagement will be essential.
