The Mask Falls in Hangu: Khawarij Propaganda Cannot Launder the Blood of Martyrs
On the night of July 30, 2026, the Khazina Banda police checkpost in Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, became the latest altar of sacrifice in Pakistan’s long and costly war against terrorism. Nine police personnel, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Diyar Khan, were martyred and 28 others injured after terrorists stormed the checkpost with heavy weapons. What followed the carnage, however, was almost as revealing as the attack itself a calculated propaganda campaign by the same terrorists, distributing money to the wounded in staged videos designed to project a humanitarian image.
This cynical theatre deserves to be called exactly what it is: a lie dressed in charity’s clothing.
Cowardice Disguised as Warfare
The attackers first used explosive laden quadcopters to target the police post before launching their ambush a tactical signature that reveals the Khawarij for what they truly are. They do not fight armies in open battle. They do not confront security forces on equal terms. They plant drones, booby trap roads, and ambush vehicles of reinforcements rushing toward their fallen comrades. After the initial assault on the Khazina Banda checkpoint, additional police personnel led by the SDPO City were immediately dispatched to reinforce the post only to find that the terrorists had already laid an ambush along the route, targeting the relief party as well.
This is not warfare. It is predation. It is the methodology of people who cannot win a fair fight, so they rig every engagement in their favor and then present staged videos to the world claiming moral authority.
The Propaganda Machine and Its Purpose
The distribution of cash to injured persons by the same group that caused those injuries is not humanitarianism. It is a psychological operation. It follows a well documented pattern: terrorize, then perform sympathy; destroy, then offer reconstruction; kill the police officer, then console his grieving family on camera. The objective is to confuse the public, particularly in communities already fatigued by years of violence, into seeing these groups as complex political actors rather than what they are terrorists sustained by criminal enterprise.
According to a captured terrorist, group operations are funded both by external support from commanders based in Afghanistan and through criminal activities, including extortion, vehicle theft, and kidnappings for ransom. The Khawarij of TTP are involved in taking extortion across many areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, extracting money from contractors working on development projects, as well as from politicians, government employees, and industrialists. Drug trafficking adds another revenue stream to this criminal portfolio. These are not the funding mechanisms of a liberation movement. They are the business model of organized crime wrapped in religious sloganeering.
The Numbers That Cannot Be Faked
While Khawarij propaganda can be manufactured in minutes, the statistics of sacrifice spanning decades cannot be altered. The KP Police have paid an extraordinary and largely unacknowledged price in blood for Pakistan’s security. Since 2001, 2,413 KP Police personnel have embraced martyrdom in the line of duty against terrorism, with the total since 1970 standing at 2,659 a staggering generational toll.
The trend in recent years demands urgent national attention. The year 2025 recorded 235 police martyrdoms in KP alone. By the first seven months of 2026, that number has already reached 150 placing this year on course to exceed the grim benchmarks of previous years. This follows 169 martyrdoms in 2024, 197 in 2023, 93 in 2022, and 63 in 2021. The numbers are not declining they are climbing again.
Of the 437 security personnel killed in terrorist attacks across Pakistan last year, 174 the largest single contingent wore the uniform of a provincial police force, not the khaki of the army. Most fell in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. And critically, it is the foot soldiers of the force who bear the heaviest burden. Of the total KP Police martyrs, 1,906 were constables, 346 were head constables, 157 were ASIs, 161 were SIs, and 54 were inspectors. These are not generals directing strategy from headquarters. These are young men posted at checkpoints on dark mountain roads, earning modest salaries, holding the frontier of Pakistan’s peace.
Who Truly Serves the People
The answer to the Khawarij’s propaganda stunts does not need to be elaborate. It only needs a simple comparison. On one side: men who wake before dawn, drive through ambush prone terrain, staff checkpoints in bitter cold and scorching heat, and die in service of citizens they will never personally know. On the other: those who plant quadcopter bombs and then hand out cash on camera. In Q2 of 2026 alone, KP suffered a 53 percent surge in violence linked fatalities, a surge that fell predominantly on the shoulders of the police personnel tasked with containing it.
Bannu district alone recorded 134 attacks on its police last year, 27 of them fatal. The Khawarij do not distribute aid in Bannu. They ambush, they bomb, and they film the aftermath for propaganda reels.
Pakistan’s Resolve Is Not for Negotiation
The KP Inspector General, after the Hangu attack, stated that the morale of KP Police remains high and their resolve firm. He praised the personnel who stood like rocks against the enemy under extremely difficult and nerve racking circumstances. These are not hollow words. They are earned through two decades of continuous sacrifice.
Pakistan’s counterterrorism response has intensified correspondingly. In intelligence based operations conducted on the night of July 28–29 in Khyber district, security forces killed twenty four terrorists belonging to Fitna al Khawarij. The campaign under Operation Azm e Istehkam continues to roll back terrorist networks across KP and Balochistan. The Khawarij understand that the tide of public sentiment, hard won through years of their own atrocities, has turned against them. Their propaganda campaign in Hangu is a symptom of that desperation.
The Public Is Watching and Judging
The citizens of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are not naive. They have seen what terrorism looks like from the closest possible distance in their bazaars, their schools, their mosques, and on their roads. They have buried constables and DSPs alike. They know who protects them and who terrorizes them. No staged video can rewrite that lived experience.
The Khawarij’s humanitarian performance in Hangu will not rewrite the public verdict. The police officer who died at the Khazina Banda checkpoint, and the 28 colleagues who bled alongside him, have left behind a testament of service that no propaganda can match.
Pakistan’s resolve, tested across 25 years and more than 2,600 police martyrdoms in KP alone, remains unbroken and the Khawarij’s mask, no matter how carefully arranged, continues to slip.
