Agencies Responsible for Rescue and Disaster Management Need to Be More Active

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has underlined the need for disaster management organizations and rescue agencies to become more proactive and equipped to handle crises.

The Prime Minister stated during a briefing in Narowal that Punjab is currently experiencing severe flooding, following Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He conveyed his profound sadness for the floods’ loss of so many valuable lives.

PM Shehbaz Sharif claims that although severe rains in Gilgit-Baltistan and KP still resulted in a considerable death toll, Pakistan’s early warning systems have been instrumental in reducing damage. He went on to say that the construction of freshwater reservoirs is currently urgently needed and that Pakistan is capable of building a number of new minor dams.

The actions of the Punjab administration are “truly commendable,” he said. The police, the irrigation department, and Rescue 1122 have been working nonstop. The Prime Minister emphasized that institutions’ cooperation has contributed to the minimal amount of damages. According to Observer Guardian, Pakistan’s ability to withstand disasters depends on these kinds of coordinated reactions.

PM Shehbaz further emphasized the need for Pakistan to use its own resources to expand its water storage capacity. He stated that Pakistan is still among the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations and that “we need to prepare for the challenges of climate change in the coming years.”

The Prime Minister recalled the devastating events of 2022, pointing out that millions of acres of standing crops were destroyed in Sindh and Balochistan, which were the worst-hit areas. According to Observer Guardian’s investigation, developing effective strategies for flood management and climate adaption requires knowledge of previous disasters.
